Although India has over thousands of colleges and universities, it is not enough to adequately meet the higher education needs of over one billion people. As a result, India is facing serious challenges to its education system many complain is choosing quantity over quality. While many top-notch engineers, computer specialists and doctors graduate from India’s universities every year, many graduates are sorely lacking in the skills necessary to find employment comparable with the degree they have earned. For example, research into India’s higher education graduates found that less than 15 percent of graduates are capable of handling the job for which they were educated while only about 25 percent of degreed engineers are employable. This statistic emerges from the findings of Infosys, an impressive information technology corporation stating that out of the over one million applications they received from Indian engineering graduates, only about two percent actually qualified for employment.

Other problems affecting Indian colleges and universities include:

Limited range of class subjects offered–mostly involving engineering, computer and medical options

Education quality has been reduced due to its “seller’s market” reputation

Many Indian students are choosing to study in other countries, which creates financial problems for higher education institutions having to manage on reduced budgets.

Teaching is not considered an attractive career in India–professors are paid ridiculously low wages

The Indian government predominantly regulates the educational system, which monetarily benefits local politicians
